Harton and Westoe campaign evaluation

The campaign for the Harton and Westoe Fitness Club was done on 3 platforms: an article (on Wordpress), a YouTube video (on YouTube) and a social media account (Twitter)


Statistics:
Over the course of a month (product released on April 2nd 2019) the promotional video I uploaded entitled 'Harton and Westoe Fitness Club promotional video' garnered 64 views and 4 likes. (Above is a screenshot showing the views and likes)

I also released a short article (about a minute read) entitled 'Why you should visit the Harton and Westoe Fitness club - opinion.' which promoted the club and it told the audience the work that Chris Goodall (Box Clever) and it got around 50 views (reads) and in the article I made reference to the video, thus giving the video promo which will increase the audience.

The third and final product I 'made' was a social media profile (Twitter but I also used Instagram to promote the video) and combined they had 300 plus followers (121 on Twitter and 198 on Instagram) and the main use of these was to promote the other two products, I would post the links to the article and the video constantly to remind the audiences of the two products.

Evaluation:
I released my YouTube video for the club on April 2nd, I decided to release the video on this date because so I could get it out to as many people as possible, the quicker that the video is released the more likely it is to be seen by a wide audience. Regarding the video itself, I feel it benefits from being just an advertisement, what I mean by this is that the video can be viewed at any time of the year, which benefits the club also because they wouldn't have to make 4 separate advertisements for the 4 seasons. (The reason I bring this up is that many companies often run advertising campaigns which relate to whatever season/time of the year it is, this is a point as the club may not have the marketing budgets like massive corporations do, so to have a single advertisement/promotional video benefits them greatly)


Ryan Lock, who is in my class watched the video and told me his thoughts on it overall, he states... "The promotional video was good and entertaining, however I think it should be longer and include more information about the club rather than just showing after the training session. Doing this I believe would interest the audience more into the product because of the extra information that you will have included." This feedback shows that that video is well liked but it could do with some improvements, Ryan commented on how there could've been more information on the club and I feel he is 100% correct, my video is short but it still could've had more information rather than the 'mini' interview that I did with Ryan in the clip. I could've included how much a session is at the club, the opening hours, but regardless I am happy with the feedback, it definitely has proven to me that I'll do things differently in the future. And finally I have gathered that most audience members believe that my video is too short, despite intending it to be an 'ad' I believe that the video would've benefitted from it simply being longer, instead of it being 32 seconds long I could've upped it to around 50 seconds to a minute, but I thank Ryan for his feedback as it'll make my future work better. Regarding the likes and views, (as of writing the video now has: 68 views and 4 likes) the video has no dislikes, this shows that it was popular with digital audiences as if anyone had something negative to say/show about the video then there'd be more dislikes, it shows that audiences enjoyed it also as 'liking' something shows how much you like/appreciate it.

I asked my friend Sam to look at my blog post and give me her feedback on it on what is good and how it can be improved, she states... "It is well written and the informal tone makes it easier to read, the information about the charity is good and informative but I feel it is too long if anything, you could talk about what the charity actually does and where the money goes too (you could dedicate a few sentences to it. And finally you could talk more about what equipment the club offers and their uses, it's still a good piece." This feedback shows that the article itself is well written which allows everyone to read it, as if it wasn't readable then I could've lost out on a potential audience. I personally agree with the feedback given, I believe that I should've spread out the information in the article. I could've wrote an equal amount for what the charity does, what equipment is available, what is done with the money raised etcetera. And like she said I feel I focused on one specific topic when I should've dedicated an equal amount of time to it. Example when I mentioned how Chris Goodall raised £120,000 for charity I could've explained how much money went to each charity. I feel that this feedback is useful and it'll help me make my future works better, however the original article is still liked and it still is informative to the audience, it still tells them about the club and what makes the club an ideal club for any budding boxers. The 50 views show that it is popular with audiences.

Finally, my friend Nathan gave me his thoughts and opinions on using social media to promote the campaign, I used a Twitter account to heavily promote the YouTube video and short article. He said: "I think it's good as most young kids are on social media so they'll see it and it's better for the campaign as young people are the most active group on social media so it makes sense to target your main audience. However, there's a downside to it as nowadays most consumers are wary about the media they view, and certain audience members may not believe the things you're saying about the club which can create problems, which is a result of the hypodermic needle theory being less significant", I fully agree with everything Nathan said. With using social media there's not much you can change, you can post on your platform and that's about it. It is true that I used social media because of my prior knowledge knowing that young people are active on social media, and social media can spread pieces of media around through word of mouth: for example someone could tell their friends about the video, then that person tells their friends, it's a neverending cycle.

Overall, I believe my campaign was a successful one. I believe this because every product that I released was very well received, for example, the YouTube video didn't have a single dislike, which shows that everyone who viewed thought it was a good video which gave the audience a glimpse into life at the club, which is what I intended, in the video I wanted to show everything you can do at the club and I felt I did that well. However, one criticism I do agree with is that the video should've been longer, the video was under 35 seconds and despite intending it to be an advertisement (which it was) it might've been a better idea to up the video to a few minutes going through each individual piece of equipment and how to use it, that is one thing I would've done different, instead of trying to summarize everything you can do in a short amount of time, I'd take the time to go into detail on each aspect of the club which would benefit an audience as if they're going into the club for the first time, they'd probably want to be in the know into what is available just to avoid potential disappointment.

Regarding my article I thought that was a success also, like with the video, I got some positive feedback and a lot of consumers got a lot of key information that they might not have otherwise. I believe that I utilized the use of a written article to appeal to other age ranges in my audience like I referred to previously. I didn't want to leave out the older consumers as despite them being a small minority it still makes sense from an advertising perspective to target them because the more consumers you advertise to, the more potential new customers that could potentially come to the club. That said the one thing I'd do differently is the same problem I encountered with the video, I feel that there was a lack of information in the article that could've been beneficial to potential audiences. My article was an opinion piece, it wasn't as informative as it should have been. If I were to write it again I would make it longer but give it as much detail as possible, I would go into detail about the different machines and why they're beneficial to the human body and I would give more precise information, in the article I didn't give the address of the club so it could be confusing to consumers who aren't sure of the exact location.

Finally, I was satisfied with how I used my social media accounts to promote the other two products I used for the campaign. I would post about the article and video every single day, taking advantage of the followers that I had on the account. If I had to the account differently I would post the links to the other two products a lot more than I did, I only posted the links once a day. I should've posted the links as many times as I could to attract as big as an audience as I could, it might have been an annoyance to the followers of the account but it would've boosted the audience, I might have lost out on potential audience members because of the lack of times that I promoted it. Also, I should've 'rebranded' the account to make it clear it was for the club, the reason I didn't do this is that people may have got confused and believed that I was the real club, which is a problem a few of my classmates actually ran into, so I avoided it to avoid any potential trouble.

Godfather baptism analysis and M2 analysis

The scene has a sound bridge, the same music plays in each different shot, a different person gets killed but the music stays the same.

There's cross cutting, as all these murders are happening at the same time, during Michael's grandson's christening. And before, the set up to these murders happen during the christening also. These events are in sync.

Medium close up, after Moe Greene has been shot the scene cuts to his face, this is effective as we see the aftermath of him being shot, we see first hand all the blood coming out of him, thus showing the gore of the situation. Another medium close up is when Michael is being asked if he renounces Satan, this scene allows us to the see the cold calm killer that he has become over the course of the entire film.

Diagetic sound; gunshots, baby crying, the priest,

Shallow focus, the shots focus on Michael and Michael only, the other attendees are out of focus which means that they're irrelevant to the scene entirely and we have to focus on Michael Corleone

The dominant image of this magazine is the main selling point, it's of Tom Hiddleston so it makes it clear that his story is the main one.

However, in this magazine the stories themselves are equally sized, which shows that there's not a dominant story but the dominant image will make you focus on the story to do with that.

Semiotics

Semiotics are signs.

Ferdinand de Saussure suggested signs are a combination of the signifier (eg: the image/gesture/word) and the signified (eg: what we assume it means once we have interpreted it)

Sign = what it is. Signifier = what it means.

Denotation: the literal meaning of the sign.
Connotation: the meaning that is attached to the sign.
Symbol: a sign that stands for something - it must be culturally learned

We mainly interpret signs unconsciously by relating them to familiar codes and conventions.

Each type of media language has its own sign and codes, although some may overlap.

Goodfellas poster.

The darkness in the poster signifies that this film is going to be a dark, gritty film. However, someone could interpret the darkness as what the characters have to be: they have to be in the shadows.  This poster also pays 'homage' to the Godfather, as in the poster some of their faces are dark to make them look menacing and vicious, this is exactly what people working on the Godfather (1972) did with Vito Corleone.

There's a dead body laying on the ground, this obviously indicates someone is dead but it also connotes that the characters in the film are vicious cold killers who are very different to normal people like you and I.

In the poster you can see the three characters 'overlooking' the street, this could imply that these 3 have a significant influence on the streets.

Generic codes and conventions - helps producers to shape their media product and helps the audience to understand what is being conveyed and how they'd react to it.

Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories - technical (eg: camerawork) and symbolic (eg: character feelings)

The audience expect certain codes and conventions from genre, and may choose their media products based on this.

Genres aren't fixed and will evolve. Most media will cross genre boundaries to maintain an audience interest, or genres may reflect cultural and social changes.

Repetition and difference: the audiences want the same codes and conventions that they're used too, they want a 'degree of familiarity.' If a film hasn't got the same codes and conventions you've come accustomed to then you won't like it.

Difference - you want something familiar but you don't want the exact same thing. They tweak the 'formula' to make it look like you're getting something different.

Subgenres - specific categories that fall within a wider genre (Eg: zombie film is a subgenera of horror)

Hybrid genre - a mix of several genres, combining codes and conventions.

Genre subversion - purposefully not fulfilling/changing convention

Genre pastiche - a knowing copy of a genre (Eg: Quentin Tarantino)

Genre parody - a spoof of a genre for comedy purposes (Eg: Scary Movie)

The Office: it's subgenre of the sitcom, it is a mockumentary. Because this show puts us (the audience) into situations that they will have likely experienced but The Office puts their own comedic spin on it, we've all known a boss like David Brent, someone who just wants to be seen as a friend rather than a boss. And a sitcom puts the viewer in everyday scenarios.
